A transport authority wanted to understand if hard braking from trucks would strip off the Calcined Bauxite road surface and impact surface friction.

To understand if trucks were impacting the lifetime of the surface and whether further treatments were necessary to preserve the structure, the authority observed approximately 2,000 hard braking events over a 12-month period.

By analysing g-force and hard braking, the authority found that X-acceleration data (i.e., Acceleration and deceleration) was within safe thresholds of 0.47 and -0.47.

X-acceleration graph showing that acceleration and deceleration was within a safe threshold (between 0.47 and -0.47)

The transport authority established that instances of hard braking from trucks in the area are low and will not damage any high-friction surface treatments.

As a result, the authority will go ahead with the installation of the high-friction surface treatment.
