A transport authority wanted to understand how connected vehicle data could be used to improve the business use cases for road operators across both car and freight vehicles.

The client wanted to understand the relationship between 3 factors and their impact on the road network:

The data showed a clear correlation between road roughness and the difference between the actual speed of drivers and the posted speed limit. The higher the road roughness score, the slower the actual speed of drivers.

The data also demonstrated a clear correlation between the seal width (i.e., how wide the road is) and the difference between the actual speed of drivers and the posted speed limit. The wider the road, the higher the actual speed of drivers.

Using these insights, the client was able to use this data to identify locations where improvements to road roughness and/or the width of a road would result in freight efficiency gains. The red and yellow dots indicate areas where the most efficiency gains can be made if the road surface is either upgraded or the seal width is widened.
